Didn’t you enjoy Tommy Coats’s story on the father of Dr. Donald Moore last week? There are so many local color stories that will be lost in time if we don’t share them verbally or in print. Thank you-Tommy- Mr. Moore’s story is now preserved in newsprint.
Death of a loved one brings with it an uncontrollable pain and I am sure the bite of it was felt by Peggy Johnson Penny who had lost her mom, Lucille Jones Johnson of Lillington (Daily Record Jan. 31, 1992).
Wedding bells were to ring for Beverly Jernigan, daughter of James R. Jernigan. She was to marry Anthony Riewestahl at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Elsewhere, students in three classes at Coats Elementary School were to be treated to a pizza party as a reward for having the most parents to sign up as members of the PTO.
It had been seven years since the high school students at Coats were assigned to Triton High School. Many feared that Coats students would be lost in the mass competitiveness at Triton. That was surely not the case-Coats students stood shoulder to shoulder in all aspects in the high school environment. For example, Paige Stephenson, daughter of Cecil and Beverly Stephenson, was chosen one of four students as Students of the Week at Triton. Paige was a Beta honor, “Most Valuable Player” in tennis and a Bill Tart Memorial Award recipient. Paige had earned the best offensive softball player and best offensive and MVP in basketball. Another of the four was also a Coats girl. Marsha Johnson was involved in many extracurricular activities and maintained a very high academic average. Marsha had also been crowned as Homecoming queen. Marsha was the daughter of Stacey and Betty Johnson, Sr. (Daily Record Feb. 3, 1992).
Remember when I asked a few columns back where was the restaurant named Brave Falcon? Now we know. Bickett and Judy Turlington were preparing to open “Sonny’s Restaurant” in the site of the former Brave Falcon on NC 55. Wasn’t this the site of Luke’s and the current site of the Dragonfly Florist?
I do know the Linda Jo Johnson was promoted from the Buies Creek First Citizens to the Coats branch as a service representative. While Linda was changing the site of her workplace, Joyce and Bobby Stewart were returning to the USA after a business trip to London. Doesn’t that sound impressive for two Coats natives? Their granddaughter Erin had celebrated her 8th birthday in the Dunn Skate Land. Erin’s parents were Hank and Martha Hurd.
Robert Jones, 73, of Coats had died on Monday. His services were at Coats Chapel FWB Church with burial in the Resthaven Cemetery. Surviving Mr. Jones were four children (Daily Record Feb. 4, 1992).
Mary Stewart Hough, 90, of Coats, had died Wednesday at the Charles Parrish Nursing Center. She was a daughter of the late Charlie and Mollie Readon Stewart. She had enjoyed the membership of the Coats Senior Citizens Swinging Elders. Rev. Jesse Mooney officiated at the Coats Baptist Church and Lakeside Memorial Gardens. She left one surviving son, Stewart Hough of Fayetteville (Daily Record Feb. 6, 1992).
Timothy Walter Stewart and Charlotte Moore were married at the Midway Pentecostal Holiness Church. Ricky Sherrill Moore, brother of the bride, officiated. Tammy Moore, Shane Ryals, Sue S. Johnson, Tracy Krause, Jamie Wood, Corinthia Johnson, Timmy Wood, and Dennis Langdon were in the wedding party (Daily Record Feb. 7, 1992).
Betty Pleasant of Coats had been named coordinator of special events at Campbell University in addition to her duties as Administrative Assistant to the President of Advancement. Elsewhere, Tony Keith and Sandy Carroll Beasley were celebrating the 1st birthday of their son. Becky and Lynn Carroll were proud maternal grandparents (Daily Record Feb. 10, 1992). Who knows the first name of the birthday boy and the name of the president of Advancement at Campbell?
I do bet that Isobel Wolf was enjoying her retirement from NCSU with the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. She was keeping the company of her mother, Mrs. Nettie Turlington-97 years young. “Issie “was also happy for her son Johnny. He was an engineer with the N.C. Department of Transportation in Elizabeth City. Wonder if Johnny, Betty and Amanda drove down to help celebrate the 100th birthday of Mrs. Laylon Turlington.
I just have to share that both these two Turlington family connections descended from Willis Turlington’s two sons-Randall and Oscar Turlington and continue to live on the original land Willis Turlington purchased from Dushee Shaw heirs in 1839.
Congratulations were due to Irene Fish for being Skats Employee of the Week. Other good news from the Notes by Belle Williams shared that Robbie Stewart was recuperating from an accident and Garland Whittington had returned from surgery at VA Hospital in Durham. Sonya and Michael Pope had a nice dinner at the Golden Coral to celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary.
A special thank you goes to Geraldine Byrd for remembering her husband Bobby Byrd and to the special someone for memorializing Ann Beasley. Bobby and Ann were good friends of the museum.
Some say that you really have to experience something to have a true understanding of it. I can now identify with that old adage. Since H.L. died, I feel a part of me is missing -maybe like a bird with one wing fluttering around or a pot without a handle that is too hot to be picked up -he truly made me whole. He was my wall to bounce off some of our crazy ideas on how to make things better at the museum. He called them “visions”.
My family has been astounded and comforted to have received dozens of sympathy cards, phone calls and hugs from those who knew H.L. We are truly appreciative of the following who have honored his last request that memorial donations be given to the Coats Museum: Becky Adams. Junior and Celia Barbour, Robie and Lynda Butler, Albert A. Corbett, Jr., Allen and Diana Danenburg, Gary Denning, Ralph and Loren Denning, Glenda Denning, Gayle W. Jones, Larry and Gail Rumler, Betty Sorrell, Joy Spivey, Hannah Tart, Hilda Pope, Randy and Rhonda Stephenson, David and Kenny Holmes, Carolyn Thomas and Louise King, Cathy Johnson, Annis Barbee, Jutta Turlington, Gerry Honeycutt, Jeanette Johnson, Eric and Sally Benson, Mike and Claudia Tocci, Lenny Parker, Peggy Robinson, Peggie and Billy Pope, Marie and Stephanie Salmon, Shirley Wicker, Suzann Allen, Dianna Meadows, Cheryl Owens, Jill Rayburn, James and Opal Coats and Michael and Sondra Smith-thank you.
