February had arrived and likely the farmers were preparing for the crops for 1993. Appropriately, in Coats, the Lions Club had saluted the NC FFA as it had done the past 20 years. Gus Simmons, a 1992 honor graduate of Southern Wayne High School, addressed the Coats Lions group.
The weather was probably very chilly but it did not slow down the activities in the Coats Grove area. The Pleasant Memory Royal Ambassadors visited Campbell University. Dwight Parrish directed the group. The Liberty Extension Club had held its February meeting at the home of Juanita Hudson. Mary Jo Mann presided. Adna Parrish, Dorothy Denning and Juanita Hudson participated in the program. Jenna Gehring, a native Bugoelavia, shared her country’s experience and devastation resulting from wars. She was employed with Applied Computer Technology in Coats.
The members in attendance for the program were Dorothy Denning, Juanita Hudson, Linda Massengill, Rebeth Mitchell, Elizabeth Nordan, Adna Parrish, Christine Parrish, and Thessie Daniel (Daily Record Feb. 12, 1993)
Coats had lost another citizen who lived to be in his nineties. Recall that Mrs. Nettie Turner Turlington had recently died at age 98. Now the community had learned that Gartha Hayes, 95, of Route One Benson, had died on Friday. Surviving him were his wife, Maude Weeks Hayes, and his daughter, Edna Hayes Coats of Benson (Daily Record Feb. 12, 1993).
Mr. Willis Pope was a resident at Brighton Nursing Home in Fuquay. Virginia and Banks Pollard were happy and smiling that they had a great-granddaughter (Daily Record Feb. 18, 1993).
Carlton Tyndall, 32, of Route 2, Coats, had died in the N.C. Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill after an extended stay. He was the son of James E. Tyndall. His services were held at Rose and Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Coats. Revs. Ralph and Ronnie Byrd officiated. Surviving him was his mother Gladys H. Tyndall and a sister Gladys Montez and a half brother Joe Atkinson (Daily Record Feb. 19, 1993).
Miss North Carolina had visited Coats School and had urged the students to “Beat the Odds”. Miss Heidi Williams was pictured in the Daily Record signing autographs for James Norris and Jeremy Tysinger.
The Coats Town Board suggested that they settle their own dispute. Some neighbors asked for a divider between their houses and Carolina Trailer Park (Daily Record Feb.23, 1993).
The CACC had saluted Ron’s Barn as the Coats Business Focus of the Week. Ron Jenkins owned the business. Phyllis Jackson served as assistant manager. The restaurant featured country style cooking and freshly cooked barbecue. The restaurant hosted singing groups on Thursday nights. The Pope’s originally owned the Everett Barnes homestead and turned the livestock barn into a restaurant (Daily Record Feb. 24, 1993).
The Notes from Coats extended sympathy to the family of Maude Avery (Daily Record Feb. 25, 1993).
Eunie W. Morgan, 82, of Route Three, Dunn, had died on Friday in the Good Hope Hospital. She was widow of Paul Morgan and daughter of L.A. and Cassandra Poole. She had been an employee of Campbell University. Eunie was buried in the Williams Cemetery. She had one sibling, Dora Denning.
Wedding bells would be ringing for Todd Collins and Angela Dorman. Todd was the son of Paul and Sherry Griffin of Coats and Angela was daughter of Billy and Faye Dorman. Angela was a 1992 Triton graduate whereas Todd had graduated from there in 1990 (Daily Record Mar. 1, 1993).
H.A. and Rachel Turlington and Anna Bell and Tony Stewart had attended the Chamber of Commerce Banquet in Durham. Jeff Stewart was outgoing president of the Durham Chamber. The couples sat at the table with employees of Guaranty State Bank were Jeff was employed there as was Joe Johnson, son of the late Ed Johnson and nephew of Herbert Johnson. The son of Rachel and H.A., Jr. –Dr. Henry Turlington-had moved to Dayton, Ohio. H.A. and his siblings were looking forward to celebrating their mom’s 101st birthday on Mar. 14th. Does anyone know why these two couples would have attended the banquet together?
This I do know. Ernest Y. Cameron had died (Daily Record Mar. 4, 1993). Was his wife a Coats teacher?
Another wedding had occurred in Coats. Pamela Dixon Reaves and Daniel Vince Altman had been united in marriage in the Marriage Chapel in Dillon, SC. Pam was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dixon of Coats. Pam was employed at the Machine and Welding Company in Dunn. The groom was the son of Wiley Altman, Sr. of Angier and Louise Schnelier of Canada. Daniel was employed with Dover Elevator of Raleigh. The bride’s parents hosted a reception at their home.
C.T. Clayton, who had organized the R.A. organization at Coats Baptist twenty years ago , was honored for his retirement from R.A. service. Some fifteen members made tributes to Mr. Clayton. Pastor Jesse Mooney, Jimmy Allen, Kent Turlington, Lee Shearin, Craig Matthews, Ron Jenkins, Bob Hedrick, Steve Wilkie, Jimmy Grimes and Randy Pope were counselors in the program of thirty boys (Daily Record Mar. 5. 1993).
Parrish Hayes, s senior at Triton High School, was one of the 45 winners nationwide for the Morehead Scholarship at UNC Chapel Hill. Parrish, the daughter of Gerald and Linda Hayes, had won the scholarship valued at $40,000. The win was a goal of Parrish’s since she was in the seventh grade according to her dad, Gerald (Daily Record Mar. 8, 1993).
Hardees’s Skats Thru was the CACC business Focus of the Week. Debra Elliott was manager of the subsidiary of Bodie Noell Enterprises of Rocky Mount. The business was located at the north end of the Village Square Mall on NC 55. Several employees were Darlene Matthews, Debra Elliott, Harriette Hammons, Marcia Gomedella, Shelia Mitchell, Jennie Grimes, Ricky Myers, Patricia Allen and Tyrone Davis (Daily Record Mar. 10, 1993).
LaRae McLamb, daughter of Gail and Jerry McLamb, was collecting household supplies and clothing for Beacon Mission (located in the old Weaver Grocery Store) in order to win her Girl Scout Silver Project. Notes also shared that a big party was given for Charles D. Ennis on his 50th birthday. Charles, Marilyn, and Andrea Ennis, Ted and Sue Penny and Buster, Angela and Jeron Stone enjoyed one of Evelyn Roberts’s old-fashioned country suppers (Daily Record Mar. 11, 1993).
A sincere thank you goes to Ralph and Lorena Denning and to Delores Royals for honoring Marie Salmon with an honorarium to the Coats Museum and to Debbie and Darrell Smith for remembering H.L. with a memorial to the Coats Museum.
