Numbers are fascinating. For example, in 1990, the U.S. census recorded that the population of the United States was 249,632,692 people compared to the 332,915,073 in 2021. By subtracting numbers, one can tell the growth of the U.S. population in 31 years. Numbers determine the speed one drives on a road; the number of calories one can eat to lose or gain weight; the warmth or coolness of our houses and vehicles and the amount one pays for items. Yes, the numbers determine whether a player or team wins in competition with others.
Wonder if the students who attended the Coats Middle School Athletic Banquet at Pope’s Barn can remember the numbers from their wins and losses in the sporting events? I do know that basketball player, Robert Brinkley, was special guest and Randy Peele, associate basketball coach at Campbell, made remarks (Daily Record May 22, 1990).
As we have revisited, year by year, the history of the Coats Grove Township, do you recall that many, many years ago, a club of ladies had fundraiser after fundraiser to help support projects for the Coats School? That group of ladies called themselves the Community’s Woman’s Club. They raised funds by card games, oyster roasts, bake sales and any other activity that would add funds to their treasury to buy lights and opera seats in the 1921 brick school building, to feed and provide clothing for poor students in the white and colored schools, and to help construct a community building.
In the decade of the 90’s, there continued to be a Woman’s Club. Officers for this club were installed at Serena’s Courtyard in Lillington. Mary Jo Mann and Juanita Hudson were hostesses to the event. Mary Denning was the club president. “Party Planning for the Summer” was the program and was given by Juanita Hudson. Becky Upchurch announced as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee that Sabrina Hendley had won the quilt on which 654 dollars had been sold.
Mary Jo Mann installed the club officers who were President Mary Denning, Secretary Joyce W. Stewart, Treasurer Christine Akerman, Chaplain Laura Langdon, Historian Mary Langdon and Parliamentarian Juanita Hudson. (When visiting the Coats Museum Research Library, take a look at the Coats Woman’s Clubs scrapbooks-yes, scrapbooks-to see the many years of service that the ladies of Coats Grove Township have made for the betterment of the area).
The students at Coats Middle School were developing social skills. The seventh and eighth graders dressed in their favorite party clothes to attend the prom. The Senior Center was also dressed up to make the affair a night of beauty and fun (Daily Record May 24, 1990).
Graham and Effie Turlington and Buck and Peggy Senter traveled to Amish country and the Longview Gardens in Delaware. Mrs. Florence Adams celebrated her 95th birthday. The numbers indicate that she was born in 1895 when Joseph Ary Stewart was postmaster at Troyville because there was no Coats at that time nor was there a railroad or an automobile in the area so any mail would have been delivered via some other means of travel upon some road other than the NC55 highway. Did the mail come by stage coach down the Raleigh-Fayetteville Stagecoach Road? By the way, there was no rural delivery of mail either so someone had to make the trek to Troyville, Barclaysville or Turlington to get the mail.
However, there was a Buies Creek Academy at that time. In fact, it was about 8 years old but I don’t know what road one took to get to it from Troyville. I do know though that several Coats students graduated from the now Campbell University in 1990. Edwin Brewer, B.S.; Hewitt Alexander Brown, Jr. Ed. S; Julia Danenburg Butler, Summa Cum Laude, B.S. ; Wanda Turnage Pearce, Magna Cum Laude, B.S.; Joan McDuffie Stanley, M.E.; Scott Edward Tripp, B.A.; Stephanie Parker Tripp, A.A. and Penny Gale Weaver, B.A. (Daily Record May 24, 1990).
Marriage was in the picture for some families. Amanda Glover, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Robert Glover, had married Craig Maynard, in an outdoor ceremony in Lillington (Daily Record May 25, 1990).
That marriage announcement was followed by that of Angela Joan Moore, formerly of Coats, had married Edward Hodges. Both were from Cary. Several relatives were in the wedding party: Lori Langdon, Mark Langdon, Donald Moore and Mr. and Mrs. Devon Moore (Daily Record May 28, 1990).
A third wedding announcement appeared in the local Daily Record. Gina Rebecca Parrish and Steven Jernigan were married in the Coats Baptist Church. Her sister, Tanya Parrish, was Maid of Honor. Virginia Mabry, Traci Jernigan Moore, Karen Lee, Michelle Ennis, Amy McCauley, Nicole Lee, Taylor Jernigan, Tamara Mabry, Alicia Mabry, Brandon Lee, Howard Mabry, Scott Turlington, Scott Lee and Gary Dennis were part of the wedding party. Patty Styons , Denise Matthews, Debbie E. Turlington and Helen Mabry assisted with music and direction of the event. The bride was a 1985 graduate of Coats High School and a 1986 graduate of the John Roberts Powers in Interior Design (Daily Record May 29, 1990).
While three families were celebrating weddings, another Coats family was celebrating the life of a family member. Mrs. Delphia Norris, 75, had died on Friday. Her three children were Della Pleasant, Grace Williams and Charles W. Norris. Her services were held at the Gift PB Church with burial in the Hodges Chapel Church Cemetery (Daily Record June 5, 1990).
Thank you goes to Randy and Rhonda Stephenson, Lynda and Robie Butler and H.L. and Gayle Sorrell for remembering the following with memorials: Doris C. Ennis, Margie N. Thornton, Warren Rainbolt and Gloria Byrd and an honorarium for Patsy Avery. The donations make a difference in the operation of the museum.
