When you hear the words- “Surprise! Surprise!” what television show do you think of immediately? I wonder if Lottie and Paul Pollard reacted similarly when their son Danny Pollard and wife Rita and children-Lyle and Leigh, hosted a surprise 40th wedding anniversary for them at his house. Their other children greeted them also. They were Kenneth and his wife Ann and daughter Brandy; Jody and his wife Tina and son Kevin, and daughter Debbie and friend Billy R. Turner.
Another happy event for a Coats family was that Earl Williams had retired from Post Engineers at Fort Bragg after a 31-year career. Earl was reared in Coats and married the former Louise Horne of Erwin. They had four children-daughters Janice W. Smith and Melinda Williams and sons Kelly Williams and Michael Williams.
When you read those names above, do you have special memories of them? Did it make you feel sad to know that several of them are now deceased? Over the last twenty-one years in researching, preserving and writing about the Coats area and its people, the museum researchers have traveled life’s path with so many people-their births, schools-marriages, new births-life events and finally deaths. What a gift this journey has been for us so you can revisit it.
Wanda Pollard also shared that birthday wishes were extended to Lindsey Tart, Connie Garriss, Alan Stephenson, Ann Weaver, Max Beasley and Benny R. Stephenson.
The Coats Party Beverage team of the Dunn Recreation Women’s Softball League had qualified for the USSA Class C. State Tournament. They had finished 8th with the excellent record of pitching by Jan Coats. Other team members were Paula Blackman, Dawn Dew, Cathy Honeycutt, Teresa Langdon, Donna Dean McLamb, Mary Weiss, Annette Ferguson, Kathy Reilly, Jeanie Lynch and Linda Taylor (Daily Record Aug. 5, 1987).
More Notes from Coats began with Wanda Pollard expressing sympathy to the family of the former Coats Police Chief Clarence Moore and I might add that he is one of the most remembered chiefs in the history of Coats. Visitors often share special stories of his service to the town and county.
Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Garriss had just returned from a Hawaii vacation and Dr. and Mrs. Harold Dixon and family had returned to Coats from a vacation of country music in Nashville, TN. Greg , Kim and Stephanie Holmes had established residence on Church Street in Coats. Mr. and Mrs. Baxton Pollard had a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Bain Carter of Fayetteville.
Wanda shared in her notes that anniversary wishes went to Dr. and Mrs. Mark White, Mr. and Mrs. Barney Williams, and Mr. and Mrs. Don Stewart while birthday wishes were for Terry Grimes, Gary Powell, Michelle Williams, Scott Turlington, Millard Lamm, Lonnie Dorman, Clyde Ennis, Howard Penny, Jr., J.C. Lucas, Margaret Stewart and Donna Currin (Daily Record Aug. 7, 1987).
The CACC Business Focus of the Week was Patsy’s Beauty Den, owned by Patsy Joyner and located on NC Highway 55 S. On hand to present the award to Patsy and Operators-Diane Parker and Kris Norris- were Wade Stephenson, Ann Jones and Dottie Tyndall.
Jonathan Todd Ennis had graduated from Campbell University. Todd is the son of Kathy and John A. Ennis. Todd’s grandparents were Alvis and Louise Ennis and William F. and Muriel Dorman. Todd is married to Kimberly Lynn Owen and was employed in the Research Triangle.
Meanwhile, Wanda Pollard extended sympathy to the families of Devon Page, Jack Tart and Mrs. Hazel Stevens. The Methodist Church welcomed their new minister, Rev. Jack Page, and family. Get well wishes went to Mr. Lee Williams, Mr. Joe Penny, Jr., David Stevens, and Mr. Doc Denning who had returned from Wake Med.
Special recognition went to Amy Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Whitley. Amy was one of four children and she made her home in Coats where her husband came to Coats to work at the First Citizens Bank . The Browns had a daughter Harper in 1986. Amy was the Coats Woman’s Club Woman of the Year in 1986.
Birthday wishes went to Vance Penny, Bickett W. Turlington, Juanita Hudson, Audrey Stewart, Joey Hawley, and Liza Pleasant. Anniversary wishes went out to Mr. and Mrs. Howard Penny, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. M.T. Strickland, Mr. and Mrs. Billy G. Pope, Mr. and Mrs. Stacy Williams, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ennis (Daily Record Aug. 12, 1987).
Mr. and Mrs. Hartwell Whittington announced the engagement of their daughter, Sherri Lynn Whittington to Tracy Howard Williford of Erwin. Miss Whittington was a 1983 graduate of Coats High School and a 1987 graduate of NCSU with a BA in psychology,. She was the granddaughter of the late Millard S. Whittington and Vada Whittington and the late Thurman Dorman and Marie Dorman Smith.
M.O. and Kathryn Phillips had just returned from a seven-day cruise to the Caribbean (Daily Record Aug. 14, 1987).
Who remembers this bit of history? J.C. Hawley, Teresa Honeycutt and Coaches Charles Leake and Claude Abate, organized a football team for Coats Junior High School. It was the first football team since the last year as a high school in 1984-85. Coats will play Harnett County junior high rivals and be an additional feeder program for Triton High School (Daily Record Aug. 19, 1987).
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Lee Johnson of Route One, Erwin, announced the engagement of their daughter, Kimberly Renee Johnson, to William Earl McLamb, Jr. The groom was the grandson of Maybell McLamb and James Pope and Shirley Pope (Daily Record Aug. 21, 1987).
Major Baxter Ennis received a Master’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia. Major Ennis, son of Preston and Rena Ennis, graduated from Coats High School and Campbell University with a History Degree. He was commissioned through the ROTC program as a Second Lieutenant. He and his wife, Glenda Mitchell Ennis, have three children- Jessica, Joshua and Leslie Ennis.
Baxter is a proud member of the Ennis Clan that has its roots as one of the earliest families in the Grove Township. This family continues to celebrate its heritage with a family reunion each year in July. Respecting the dangers of Covid, the reunion directors elected to skip the 2020 gathering; however, the 2021 Ennis Reunion will follow tradition and bring in family members from far and wide-Baxter being one who will travel from Chesapeake, VA. to help pull off the big gathering.
How do the volunteers at the Coats Museum feel about Baxter Ennis? To us he is one of our Hometown Heroes. He came home to address the Coats Centennial in 2005. He has shared so many items for display from his military service. Baxter used the museum to have a book signing of his book-When Leadership Mattered. Baxter loves history and has been a generous financial supporter of the Coats Museum. Museums are safe places to preserve items which might otherwise have found themselves in black garbage bags lost forever to future family members and organizations.
The museum had an outstanding board meeting last Saturday and I will share some of the events coming up at the Coats Museum next week.
