Isn’t it wonderful when grown siblings continue to enjoy being together? Such was the case when sisters Eloise Lee, Willa Dean Powell and Margelene Myatt and their husbands-Joe, Graymon and Truman-spent time together on a cruise to Nassau and visited other points of travel in Florida such as St. Augustine (Daily Record Apr. 30, 1992).
Do more couples marry in June than in any other month?
I do know that Cindy Deese and Efern Byrd were making wedding plans for the June 13th event. Efern was a 1985 graduate of Coats High School and was son of Linda and Charles Byrd, Sr.(Daily Record May 1, 1992).
Many of the readers will remember Lynda Stewart Holden. She was a popular student at Coats High and in 1992 she made the news. She had died at age 47 in her home in Fayetteville. She had also graduated from Campbell University and had taught in the Fort Bragg School system for 17 years. She was co-owner of First Security Mortgage, Corp that was established in 1987. Lynda was the daughter of Grayden and Sallie Lee Stewart. Her husband- Les Holden and daughters –Heather and Lesley – survived her. Her siblings were Larry Stewart, Sabra Pierce and Deborah Langdon and Karen Morris.
How would you like to be 84 years old and have an entire week of activities to celebrate your big birthday? Mrs. Beulah Ennis attended my church at Ebenezer Presbyterian and lived many years past this 84th birthday.
The party began in Bentwood Country Club in Fuquay-Varina with son Phillip and Teresa Ennis. Next she was taken to Raleigh to shop with her daughters-Laura Ennis and Jeanine Kluttz. Dr. and Mrs. Kluttz gave the final celebration when they took her to Heaths Steakhouse in Dunn (Daily Record May 2, 1992).
Cindy Autry Bennett and husband were parents of twin daughters on April 20th at the BJMH in Dunn. Dwight and Linda Glover Autry were maternal grandparents. Great-grandparents were Vada Glover and the late Herbert Glover and Ora Lee Autry of Lillington and the late Coolidge Autry. The paternal grandparents were Herman and Phyllis Bennett of Coats and great-grandparents were Cecil and Ada Bennett of Burlington (Daily Record May 5, 1992).
Does anyone know how many sets of twins are in the Glover family?
I do know that Eddie and Joan Mize announced the engagement of their daughter, Angela Ruth Mize to Christopher Wayne Godwin of Dunn. Both were employed at Morganite in Dunn (Daily Record May 6, 1992).
The District # 3 Commissioners election on the Democratic ticket was over and H.L. Sorrell, Jr. was the winner (Daily Record May 6, 1992).
Ezra L. Denning, 79, of Coats had died at Wake Medical Center. He was the son of the late William Arthur “Billy” Denning and Ida Williams Denning. He was retired from Electric Sales and Service in Angier. His wife, Gladys C. Denning and children- Tommy and Linwood Denning, Ruth Dennis, and Judy Wood survived him. Carsie, Hyson, and Arthur were his brothers and Ollie Raper and Kissie Williams were siblings (Daily Record May 6, 1992).
Six local young men were chosen as candidates for Tar Heel Boys State from the American Legion Post 109 in Benson. Johnny Honeycutt (son of Johnny and Peggy Honeycutt), Andy Cole (son of John and Irene Cole), Donald Brian Stewart (son of Teresa and Don Stewart), Brian Harmon (son of Bennie Harmon and Wendy Harmon), Anthony Dagenhart (son of Robert and Jean Williams), and Kevin Dale Parrish (son of Keith and Martha Parrish) were listed (Daily Record May 7, 1992).
The Church of God had their Mother-Daughter Banquet. Carolyn Moore and Sue Baker were in charge. Honors as oldest member went to Rosa O’Neal. Mother of the Year was Rosa Jackson; Youngest Mother was Melinda Rogers and Church Member of the Year was Kathleen Norris.
Several from the Coats area had various illnesses. Leroy Stewart had had surgery at Rex. Recovering at home were Elizabeth Stewart, Kenneth Turlington, Billy Ray Ennis and Herbert Johnson. While these folks were recovering, Rosie, Nora and Madge planned to present the play “Senior Drug Abuse” at the Senior Center. Do you have any idea who was behind those stage names (Daily Record May 7, 1992)?
Wedding bells were planned for Dawn McLamb and James Talton McLamb, Jr. Dawn was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Lee. Ruth Wood was grandmother of Dawn (Daily Record May 12, 1992).
The Coats Senior Center folks had competed in the Senior games. Joe Lee won three gold, one silver and a bronze; Russell Morvant won three gold; Tom Cherry won two gold, three silver and two bronze. Lydia Byrd won a gold and a bronze. Wil Breeden took six gold and a silver. Gail Pope won four silver, a gold, and a bronze. Eloise Lee pulled off a gold, a silver and a bronze. Allene Honeycut earned a gold and a silver. The Senior Center cheerleaders –Rebeth Mitchell, Allene Honeycutt, Helen Carroll, Lydia Byrd, and Hazel Barnes won a bronze.
That is a big number of medals-how long do the games last?
Julia Butler shared with Belle in her “Notes from Coats” that the Coats PTA treated the Coats faculty with a treat each day of the week with a different one. Wonder what some of the treats were- apple, orange, doughnut??
I do know for sure that Samantha Brown, daughter of Pam and Sam Brown, was winner of Tiny Miss Cape Fear Academy 1992. Rachael and H.A. Turlington finally had a granddaughter who was born to Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Turlington. Florine Penny had a nice surprise. Gary and Rhonda Penny had beautiful red roses delivered to her at the Senior Center. Gail and Hilda Pope and Morris and Jean Whitman had been on a weeklong cruise to the Bahamas (Daily Record May 4, 1992). Gail was brother to Eloise, Willa Dean and Margeline mentioned above. Were they on the same cruise?
My family continues to be humbled by the generosity of friends of H.L. The cards continue to come and a special thank you goes to Hope Moore and Frances and Ronald Avery for their memorials to the museum in H.L.’s honor last week. Your giving will make a difference in the growth of the museum.
