The Coats Woman’s Club met on February 20 at the home of Mrs. Tom Nordan. Hostesses for the night were Mrs. Fletcher Flowers, Mrs. Harold Dixon, and Mrs. Nordan.  Mrs. Edward Turlington, vice-president, presided.  Dr. Robert L. Perkins, a geologist, showed slides of the results of strip-mining of coalfields in West Virginia.  Mrs. Hannah Tart was conservation chairman who introduced the program (The Daily Record March 3, 1973).
Mr. and Mrs. L. Edward Byrd of Coats announced the engagement of their daughter, Judith Elaine Byrd, to William Keith Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rupert Stewart of Route 1, Benson, N.C.  (The Daily Record March 5, 1973).
Miss Gloria Dare Ogburn and Ronald Leon Barbour pledged wedding vows in a double-ring ceremony Sunday, February 25, at the Willow Springs Primitive Baptist Church.  Elder and Mrs. J. M. Mewborn officiated at the 3 P.M. rites (The Daily Record March 6, 1973).
Joyce Paulette Johnson of Route 2, Angier, N. C. had her engagement to Dale Wayne Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Young, announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Johnson of Route 2, Angier. Jim Moore, a senior government major at Campbell College, was an intern with the Coats town governmental officials.  The Coats Hunting and Fishing Club was having another field trial on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.  Harold Dixon was secretary-treasurer of the club (The Daily Record March 7, 1973)
Lt. Bari Stone died in a ground-level collision of two jet tankers during a predawn practice alert at Lackbourne Air Force Base, near Columbus, Ohio, last Thursday morning.  Lt. Stone was co-pilot of one of the KC 135 Stratotankers involved in the crash.   Lt. Stone, son of William C. Stone, associate professor of music at Campbell College, and Mrs. Stone of Buies Creek.  Lt. Stone was an honor student at Buies Creek, attended Campbell College for a year and graduated from the Air Force Academy where he also won honors.  Surviving him were his wife, Ann Stewart Stone and a daughter, Kelly, who was born in August of 1971. He was son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stewart of Coats (The Daily Record March 3, 1973)
Minnie Kay Guin of Coats was engaged to marry Joseph Cleo Hawley, Jr., son of Coats Principal Joe Hawley (The Daily Record March 14, 1973)
Mrs. Mittie Riles Cook, 77, of Benson died on Monday.  Services were at Rose Funeral Home with burial in the Banner Chapel Church Cemetery near Benson.  Surviving her were Mrs. R. O. Coats, Mrs. Felton Jackson, and Mrs. Clintis Whitman.  Her sons were Maylon Cook, Coleman nook, and Waylon West, four sisters - Spicy Byrd, Addie Lee, Lettie Price, and Irene Lee, and one brother, Bronnie D. Riles (The Daily Record March 15, 1973)
An impressive service was held Sunday night at the Coats Baptist Church to honor Haywood Collier and Kevin Pope of the Boy Scout Troop 779 as they received their Eagle Scout Badges, the highest honor for Scouts.  Both Scouts started in 1968. Also participating in the ceremony were Kimry Gardner, Jim Kagley, Earl Denning, Lundy Denning, Duane Beasley, Mark Stevens, Ronnie Barnes, John Wolf, Wade Daniel, Scott Fleming, Dan Honeycutt, and Joseph A. Lee, Jr.  Kevin Pope, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gail Pope and Haywood Collier, were under the leadership of scout leaders, Ed Haponski, Teeny Pleasant, Gail Pope, Nathan Collier and Lundy Denning.
Mrs. Glenda Lucas, Mrs. Brenda Weaver, and Mrs. Betty Ellen Turlington gave a bridal shower for Deborah Carol Ennis of Coats.  She was the bride elect of Donald Wade Turlington. Kyle Hugh Gregory, 53, of Buies Creek died on Monday.  He was father of Hugh Gregory of Coats, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Jones (The Daily Record March 26 1973).
Carson Gregory of the Coats section had joined other farmers in improving his farmland.  He had installed both tile and open ditch drainage in his fields in recent years (The Daily Record March 26, 1973).
Airman Cecil T. Horton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie E. Horton, had been assigned to Chanute AFB, Illinois.  He was a 1971 graduate of Coats High School (The Daily Record March 27, 1973).
Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Anthony Walden of Coats announce the birth of a daughter, Chasity Colene Walden on March 27 in Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital.  The mother was the former Joyce Ann Spears. (The Daily Record March 28, 1973.)
