September 11, 2020 Coats Museum News
The calendar displayed June, 1985 and the news shared that thirty- nine Americans from a hijacked TWA jetliner were freed after being held hostage for seventeen days. While in Coats, relatives of Mr. Sherrill McLean were mourning his passing. Mr. McLean, 41, of New York, but formerly from Coats, was survived by daughters-Deidra Cozart, Cheri McLean, and Phyllis Stewart. His siblings were Hilda Lockhart, Mazelle Pegues, Christine Plummer, Grover, Leroy and Gerald McLean (Daily Record June 10, 1985).
The Upchurch family shared the news of Donna Edwards and Travis Upchurch’s wedding. Debbie Upchurch, Tammy Denton, Donnie Wood and Graham Bass, all of Route One , Coats were attendants and Mr. C. L. Upchurch was the Best Man for his son’s wedding (Daily Record June 10, 1985).
The Harnett County Bookmobile made its rounds and stopped at locations in the Coats area such as Watkins Nursery, Dupree Farms, M. Langdon Home, Coats Home, Ferrell Home, Coats Public Library, Penny Home and Franklin’s Store (Daily Record June 12, 1985).
The June 13, 1985 Daily Record printed that Mr. and Mrs. Paul Neighbors had announced the engagement of their daughter, Renee Neighbors, to Sidney Thomas Johnson. While the Neighbors were planning a wedding, Chairman Gerald Hayes of the Harnett County Board of Education and his wife Linda were enjoying the General Lee Ball. The Town of Coats Board of Directors proposed the 1985-86 budget which was to keep the tax rate at 90 cents per $100.00.
Question—was there a time when the town board was referred to as directors and not commissioners? I do know that Joyce Eason was the new owner of Tops Beauty Salon in Dunn and Kitty Betty Betts and Denise Williams were interviewed concerning their thoughts about Triton High School (Daily Record June 14, 1985).
Hodges Chapel PFWB Church celebrated its centennial. The deacons and pastor were on hand to help with the celebration. They were Rupert Stewart, Billy Norris, Blandin Hayes, T.C. Miller, Fred Miller, and the Rev. Curtiss Tatum.
Good news was shared from the T.J. Turlington, Jr. household. Their daughter, Debbie Ann, was engaged to Mark Alan Williams. A second engagement notice came from the Coats area when Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Betts announced that of Brookie Kaye to James Ferguson. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Ferguson (Daily Record June 19, 1985).
Keith Parrish of Route One, Benson, a well known farmer, was awarded a certificate for successfully completing a two-year program in the Phillip Morris Agricultural Leadership Development Program. Mary Denning, secretary for the Coats Reunion Project, received letters of appreciation from Gerald, Linda, Heather, Allison and Parrish Hayes, Addie Lee Pope Sheppard, Class of 1947, Olin L. Wood, Class of 1933 and Marc and Jean Powell (Daily Record June 21, 1985).
Surely those notes were appreciated by Mary Lee Denning who gave countless hours to help make the reunion event successful. Have you ever spent a great deal of time on something and no one said –“Thank You”? It takes only two words to do so and Mary surely experienced it.
Miss Kimm Faircloth was escorted to the altar to marry Mr. Timmy E. Hudson by her brother, Tracy Faircloth. The bride was the daughter of Mrs. Billie Jo Faircloth of Route One, Coats. Another young man was escorting a bride down the aisle, too. Mr. Paul Capps, Jr., escorted his mother, Virginia Norris Capps of Coats to the altar to marry Glenn Odell Raynor of Benson. The bride was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Norris, Sr. of Coats (Daily Record June 24, 1985). Do any of those names sound familiar?
I bet many of you recognize these names also. Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Turlington Pope announced the birth of their daughter, Jessica Lee Pope. The mother was the former Cathy Powell and Mr. Tyrus Powell and Mrs. Barbara Byrd Mitchell were maternal grandparents and Mr. and Mrs. Newton Byrd and Mrs. Ora Powell were maternal great-grandparents. Kelly June Pope was Jessica’s older sister (Daily Record June 26, 1985).
Mr. and Mrs. Graham M. Langdon of Route One, Angier announced the engagement of their daughter, Doris Langdon, to Orbie Collins of Coats (Daily Record July 2, 1985).
Most of us who live in Harnett County think of Angier post office serving people of Harnett County only. Is that true? The Graham Langdon family lived on Zack’s Mill Road on which my husband grew up in Johnston County. Wonder how many mail carriers go out of county to deliver mail?
I do know that Joe Tart was not only an outstanding attorney but also a real friend to many. The Coats Museum was one of three choices to give memorials for Joe. We are so appreciative of his friends who have chosen to give to the museum. Thank you to Edward and Joan Greene, Gerald and Linda Hayes, Ronald and Frances Avery and Reginald and Elizabeth Dupree.
The volunteers would also like to thank the CHS Class of 1969 for remembering a former classmate, Diane Partin, who recently died. Thank you Gayle Wilkins for being the liaison.
