Coats Museum News by Gayle
Madeline Gayle Johnson Sorrell
Gayle grew up four miles northeast of Coats on the land that has been in the Johnson family since the late 1700’s. Daughter of Jonah C. and Alice Thornton Johnson, she attended Campbell University and UNC Chapel Hill. She taught English, History and Reading at Coats School for twenty-five years. She researched and wrote the history of the Grove Schools for the Together We Leave Reunion Project and authored “There and Back in a Paper Canoe” in the Heritage of Coats, North Carolina. Gayle has been the columnist for the “Coats Museum News” for the Daily Record since 2009.
The Daily Record began publishing the “Coats Museum News” in 2009. Since that time, many people have been clipping the articles and mailing them to friends and relatives all over the state and country. One of those recipients of the clippings suggested that we post them on our webpage. Each week there will be two new columns –one will be from our archives and the other will be the column from the previous week. Enjoy your ride into yesteryear in Coats and the surrounding areas.
